Creating A Reading Room At Home

Creating A Reading Room At Home
The family reading room is starting to become a popular way of using a spare room in a house again. In this age of technology children are reading far less then they ever have before. Reading books together and sharing stories used to be a family past-time. Now children rarely read books let alone spend time reading them with their parents. So what can you do to help your family start reading again? Why not change your spare room into a reading room/home library?

If the spare room to be converted has a bed in it then this needs to be removed. If there's no other room to put the bed in then it may have to go into storage. Once you have the room cleared it's time to make some plans. Look around the room and see what types of colors and desgins you'd like to use there. Think about lighting and seating too - these will be critically important in any family reading room.

Next thing you'll need is some book cases. These don't have to be antique mahogany affairs - just some simple Ikea, DIY packs will do just fine. These bookcases just need to be able to support the weight of several dozens of books - so get them cheap but make sure they're sturdy.
Next you'll need some containers for magazines. Old wicker baskets are ideal for this job. Just make sure to put magazines in there that people want to read.

If the natural or existing light in the room isn't adequate then you'll need to buy some floor lamps to make sure the room is well-lit. There's nothing worse than having to read a book in lowlight conditions - it can be a real strain on the eyes.

The room itself should have an educational but friendly feel to it. This is to be a literary room so make sure you accent the room with accessories that promote this.

Most importantly you'll need to put aside some reading time for your family. Yes you'll get objections at first but once your family rediscover the magic of books they'll wind up bugging you for more reading time before long.
